Society’s censure and derision of transgender people’s lives is an inevitable dilemma. As the transgender community usually faces discrimination, dogmatism, and systemic inequality from family and friends, these crises are due to the fact that people take the transgender community as “different” from others, or maybe they feel like they aren’t humans and should be treated differently. But here, the question is why deny people their equal rights just because they do not fit into typical gender norms?
First, we must comprehend the specific problems that the transgender population experiences, such as the absence of legal protection, stigma, harassment, and discrimination, as well as the current economic crisis and lack of health care coverage. We need to understand that transgender rights stem from basic human rights, i.e., those fundamental rights belonging to every person. We, as a society, should be open and welcoming towards all people, or at least have the tolerance to accept them as equals to all others.
“We must comprehend that basic human rights—those rights that belong to every person—are the root of transgender rights”
She’s Namkeen, a 34-year-old trans rights activist who is uplifting the transgender community in spite of an awful experience of discrimination and harassment. She is a noble example for Pakistan as a whole.
We all should accept this change as normal so that trans people don’t feel as if they are trapped in the wrong bodies. They deserve to live and flourish in their communities with the freedom to learn, love, work, and play. We must rely on inalienable human rights and what brings real change is how we change our conservative minds and avoid our strange gazes, which makes them feel comfortable in our society.
As Leo Tolstoy said, everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself!
