35 dead in Gujarat bridge collapse, It was repaired last week

In India, a suspension bridge fell away, sending hundreds of people into the river below.

On Sunday saw the collapse of a footbridge in the western Indian state of Gujarat, only days after it had reopened following restorations.

According to local media, there were more than 400 people on the bridge at the time.

According to local officials quoted by Reuters, the incident has resulted in at least 40 deaths and dozens of critical injuries.

According to the local TV station Zee News, people were tossed into the Machchu river in the town of Morbi.

People could be seen clinging to the bridge’s cables in footage that was carried by the channel as rescue workers worked to save them.

Numerous people, including children, were seen clambering out of the river and back up the bent structure of the collapsed bridge to safety in mobile camera footage that bystanders recorded and shared on social media.

Amit Jhala, a senior administrator at the state-run hospital to where victims had been taken said: “We can confirm that 30 people have lost their lives, many have been rescued from the river and some are still missing.”

The 230-meter historic bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened for the public last week.
