Afghanistan: Taliban releases five UK citizens

According to the Taliban and British officials, the Taliban released several British detained in Afghanistan after reaching an agreement in Afghanistan.

Taliban government spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement Monday that the arrested people were released on Sunday after a series of meetings between Afghanistan and British officials. “Many British people arrested about six months ago for breaking the laws and traditions of Afghan people have been released,” he said.

Mujahid does not say what laws British citizens broke or why they were arrested.

The statement stated that they all respected Afghan law, the traditions and culture of the Afghan people, and promised not to violate them again. London said five Britons were released but did not provide details of their identities or when and why they were arrested.
