According to officials, dozens of people died on a bus in Nigeria after gunmen attacked them and set fire to their vehicle in a northern state.
On Tuesday, gunmen known as bandits attacked a bus in Nigeria’s Sokoto State, according to police and residents.
When the armed men set fire to the bus, it was carrying 24 passengers. According to Sanusi Abubakar, a spokesman for the northwestern Borno State police, seven individuals fled with injuries and were transported to the hospital.
According to Reuters, the vehicle was overcrowded, and the victims were burned beyond recognition. According to the report, at least 30 bodies were tallied, including women and children.
Bandits in Nigeria use motorbikes and are known to hide in woodlands, where they frequently detain kidnapped victims awaiting ransom.
Northwestern Nigeria has long been plagued by conflict between rival communities over land, as well as attacks by heavily armed criminal gangs and vigilante killings.
Robbery and kidnapping gangs have terrorised communities in the region, raiding schools, masquerades, and markets, killing people and torching structures after stealing them.
Boko Haram and other terrorist organisations have infiltrated the gangs.
