Presidency receives NAB, Election Act (Amendment) bills

The Presidency received the National Accountability (Second Amendment) Bill 2021 and the Elections (Amendment) Bill 2022 on Monday for President Arif Alvi’s assent in order to turn these bills into laws.

According to sources, President Alvi is expected to raise objections to these bills and is likely to consult with constitutional and legal experts in this regard.

If the President returns these bills, the government will have them approved by the joint session of Parliament on June 7.

These two bills will be sent back to the President once they have been approved by the joint session. According to sources, if the President does not give his assent, these bills will automatically become law.

The bills passed by the lower house on Thursday and the upper house on Friday sought to reverse changes made in election laws by the previous PTI government regarding the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and i-voting for overseas Pakistanis, as well as limiting the National Accountability Bureau’s vast powers (NAB).
