The City Traffic Police Lahore has clarified the minimum age requirements for obtaining different types of driving licences in Punjab, covering motorcycles, cars, light transport vehicles and heavy vehicles.
According to the traffic police, applicants must be at least 18 years old to obtain a regular motorcycle or motor car/jeep driving licence. The minimum age for an LTV licence is 21 years, while HTV applicants must meet additional age or previous-licence requirements.
Minimum Age for Motorcycle and Car Licence
A person must be 18 or older to apply for a regular motorcycle or motor car/jeep driving licence in Punjab.
The same minimum age applies to both categories, meaning teenagers below 18 cannot obtain a standard motorcycle, car or jeep licence.
LTV and HTV Licence Requirements
Applicants seeking an LTV licence must be at least 21 years old, according to the traffic police guidance.
For an HTV licence, applicants must be at least 22 years old or meet the required previous-licence condition.
Traffic police guidance in Rawalpindi and Faisalabad states that an applicant must have held a Motor Car or LTV licence for at least three years before applying for an HTV learner permit.
This previous-licence requirement is separate from the minimum age condition for HTV applicants.
Juvenile Driving Permit for Teenagers
Punjab also has a separate Juvenile Driving Permit for teenagers aged 16 to 18 years.
The permit allows eligible teenagers to ride motorcycles or scooters with an engine capacity of up to 125cc, subject to specified conditions.
Applicants must provide a NADRA Smart Card or B-Form and obtain written consent from a parent or guardian. They must also pass traffic-sign and practical road tests before receiving the permit.
Helmet Use Mandatory for Juvenile Riders
Teenagers using the juvenile permit must wear a helmet while riding. Authorities can also cancel the permit in cases involving serious or repeated traffic violations.
The juvenile permit does not lower the minimum age for a regular motorcycle licence. Applicants must still be 18 years old to obtain a standard motorcycle, car or jeep licence, while LTV and HTV applicants must fulfil the higher age and experience requirements.
