The Punjab government has launched an awareness drive encouraging residents to turn kitchen waste into compost, with citizens able to earn rewards under the Chief Minister Punjab Green Credit Program.
The initiative was highlighted in a message issued on World Cleanup Day, urging households to separate biodegradable waste from regular garbage and put materials such as fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells and other organic waste to practical use.
Citizens Can Earn Green Credits
Under the program, residents who properly collect kitchen waste and convert it into compost can receive three Green Credits, with the government valuing the reward at Rs. 30,000.
The initiative seeks to make composting a simple household practice while encouraging people to reduce the amount of waste sent to conventional disposal sites.
Compost produced from kitchen waste can also be used as a natural material for plants, home gardens and other gardening activities.
Government Promotes Cleaner Punjab
The Punjab government said the Green Credit Program is designed to encourage environmentally responsible behaviour and increase public participation in efforts to keep the province clean and green.
The campaign focuses on everyday actions that households can adopt without major changes to their routines.
Under the theme “Kitchen Waste, Compost and Greener Punjab”, the government said separating and recycling organic waste could help reduce household garbage while creating a useful product for gardening.
The campaign also reflects the government’s broader push to encourage citizens to take part in environmental activities and contribute to cleaner communities.
How Kitchen Waste Can Be Reused
Residents can collect biodegradable kitchen waste separately instead of mixing it with other household garbage. Common materials suitable for composting include fruit and vegetable scraps and eggshells.
Once processed properly, these organic materials can produce compost that can be returned to the soil and used around plants and gardens.
The government has urged citizens to adopt such practices as part of their daily routines, linking household waste management with the wider goal of creating a cleaner and healthier Punjab.
