A handwritten message placed inside a bottle more than five decades ago has resurfaced during a clean-up operation in the US state of New Jersey, reconnecting one family with a cherished childhood memory.
The note, written in 1973 by a nine-year-old girl named Laurie Blair, was discovered in a marshy area by volunteers, more than 50 years after it was released into the sea.
Bottle Discovered During Clean-Up
The discovery was made by John Kauterman, co-founder of a New Jersey environmental cleanup organization, who later shared a photograph of the handwritten message on social media in hopes of identifying its author.
According to the note, the bottle had been released from Ocean City Beach on August 20, 1973.
The playful letter claimed that Laurie had been kidnapped and taken to an island off the Atlantic coast, where “cruel fishermen” were forcing her to jump into the ocean. It humorously asked whoever found the bottle to deliver the message to her family, suggesting it might save her life.
Social Media Helps Solve the Mystery
Although Laurie Blair herself could not be located, Kauterman’s social media post eventually reached her sister, Alicine Spencer.
Spencer explained that Laurie had come up with the imaginative story but asked her to write the note because she had better handwriting.
After finishing the message, the sisters sealed it inside a bottle and threw it into the ocean from Ocean City Beach as part of a childhood adventure.
She described Laurie as a creative child with an excellent sense of humour who loved making up stories.
Family Learns of Long-Lost Discovery
Alicine Spencer also shared the sad news that Laurie Blair passed away in 2019 after battling cancer.
Following the discovery, John Kauterman mailed the original message to Spencer, allowing the family to preserve a treasured reminder of Laurie’s childhood imagination.
Spencer said she plans to frame the note and display it in her home as a lasting tribute to her late sister.
