Director Honey Trehan has expressed disappointment after his film Satluj disappeared from streaming platform ZEE5 just two days after its release.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Trehan said the removal left him heartbroken and raised concerns about whether important historical stories are being allowed to reach audiences.
“I was heartbroken. The ban pushes you into a corner, and you’re forced to ask yourself whether we are seriously living in a democratic country,” he said.
The filmmaker believes the removal has prevented viewers from engaging with the life and legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, the human rights activist whose work inspired the film.
Why Honey Trehan Compared the Removal to Jaswant Singh Khalra’s Abduction
Trehan drew a symbolic comparison between the film’s removal and Khalra’s disappearance in 1995.
“Thirty-one years ago, Jaswant Singh Khalra was abducted and killed by the Punjab Police. Today, after 31 years, Khalra is being abducted again,” he said.
He urged authorities to allow the film to remain accessible to audiences.
“Please have a big heart. Let his story be told to the world. Do not abduct Khalra again,” Trehan added.
His comments have sparked renewed discussion about artistic freedom, historical storytelling, and the role of streaming platforms in distributing sensitive content.
What Is Satluj About?
Satluj is based on the life and work of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a prominent human rights activist known for exposing alleged illegal killings and disappearances in Punjab during the 1990s.
The film features a notable cast, including:
- Diljit Dosanjh
- Arjun Rampal
- Other supporting actors
The project aims to bring Khalra’s story to a wider audience through a dramatic retelling of historical events.
Why Was Satluj Removed From ZEE5?
ZEE5 has not released an official explanation for removing Satluj.
The platform took down the film within 48 hours of its premiere, leading to speculation among viewers and the film industry.
As of now:
- No official reason has been announced.
- Neither ZEE5 nor regulatory authorities have clarified the decision.
- The filmmakers have publicly expressed disappointment but have not indicated any legal action.
Without an official statement, the reason behind the film’s removal remains unknown.
International Response Gives Filmmakers Hope
Despite the setback, Trehan said the response from audiences outside India has been encouraging.
“This film had a different fate. But we are happy the story is resonating with the world. We are getting a very overwhelming response from the audience,” he said.
According to the director, international appreciation demonstrates that stories rooted in history can resonate across borders.
