Valve has officially revealed the pricing for its new Steam Machine, a pre-built gaming PC designed to work like a console in the living room rather than a traditional desktop computer.
While the device promises strong performance and easy access to PC games, its price is significantly higher than most gaming consoles currently on the market.
Steam Machine official prices
Valve confirmed the following prices for the Steam Machine lineup.
The 512GB Steam Machine is priced at 1,049 dollars.
The 512GB model with a controller costs 1,128 dollars.
The 2TB Steam Machine is priced at 1,349 dollars.
The 2TB model with a controller costs 1,428 dollars.
The Steam Machine will go on sale on June 29, and customers can register to purchase one through Valve’s official online store.
Performance similar to PlayStation 5
The pricing announcement came alongside early reviews from technology publications that tested the device ahead of launch. The Verge described the Steam Machine as a well-built product with gaming performance roughly comparable to PlayStation 5.

However, the comparison also highlights the large price gap. The PlayStation 5, made by Sony, currently sells for about 599 dollars and was first released six years ago.
Why Steam Machine costs more
Despite the higher price, the Steam Machine offers features that traditional consoles do not. It gives players access to a massive library of PC games on Steam and can also be used for other PC tasks such as browsing, productivity work, and software use, especially for users comfortable with PC settings.
Industry analysts say Valve likely had limited flexibility in pricing. PC hardware costs have increased sharply due to rising demand for artificial intelligence data centers, a situation often referred to as RAMageddon. Memory chips and other key components have become more expensive worldwide.
Hardware shortages affect the entire industry
A global shortage of memory chips continues to impact the technology sector. Even major companies are feeling the pressure. Tim Cook, the chief executive of Apple, has acknowledged that component shortages are pushing up the prices of Apple products.
Gaming consoles have not been spared either. The PlayStation 5 is now 100 dollars more expensive than it was at launch, reflecting the same supply and cost challenges.
Strong product launched in a tough market
Overall, the Steam Machine appears to be a powerful and well-designed gaming device aimed at players who want PC gaming in a console-like form. However, its high price places it in a niche category rather than direct competition with mainstream consoles.
Valve is entering the market at a time when hardware prices are unusually high, making it harder to attract price-sensitive buyers. The Steam Machine may appeal most to dedicated PC gamers who value flexibility, performance, and access to a large game library over affordability.
