The Government of India has appointed Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff, with effect from June 30, 2026, according to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Defence.
Lt Gen Seth, who is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, will succeed Gen Upendra Dwivedi, who is due to retire upon completing his tenure on the same date. On assuming charge, Lt Gen Seth will be elevated to the substantive rank of general and will become the 31st Chief of the Indian Army.
As vice chief, Lt Gen Seth has been responsible for overseeing operational preparedness, force modernization, long-term strategic planning and coordination across formations of the Indian Army.
Nearly Four Decades of Military Service
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. He brings close to four decades of operational, command and institutional experience across a wide range of military roles.
Over the course of his career, he has commanded units and formations in diverse operational environments. His command assignments include an armoured regiment in the desert sector, an armoured brigade on the western front and a counterinsurgency formation in Jammu and Kashmir.
As a lieutenant general, he also commanded the XXI Corps, also known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, a key strike formation of the Indian Army based in Bhopal.
Senior Command and Strategic Roles
Lt Gen Seth later served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he was responsible for security coordination, ceremonial duties and engagement with national and international military delegations.
Following his elevation to army commander, he held command of both the South Western Command and the Southern Command, giving him the rare distinction of leading two operational Army Commands. His tenure provided strategic oversight across multiple theatres for more than two and a half years.
Role in Modernisation and Capability Development
The incoming army chief has held several important staff and policy appointments linked to force development and modernization. These include serving as Colonel Capability Development for Mechanised Forces and Brigadier Perspective Planning and Acquisition.
Officials said his contributions played a role in shaping the Army’s Long-Term Integrated Perspective Plan, aligning operational needs with emerging technologies and future battlefield requirements.
Lt Gen Seth has also excelled in professional military education. He stood first in the Junior Command Course and received the Best All-Round Student Officer award at the Defence Services Staff College. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course, the National Defence College and has attended the Command and Staff Course in Paris.
Key Challenges Ahead
Lt Gen Seth will assume command at a time when the Indian Army is navigating multiple challenges, including operational lessons from recent military engagements, ongoing border tensions, force restructuring under the proposed theatre command system and the push for indigenisation of defence platforms.
Defence analysts say his extensive experience in operational command, modernization planning and strategic leadership is expected to guide the Army through a critical phase of institutional transformation.
