Punjab to Launch Electric Bike Rental Service in Lahore

The Punjab government has approved the launch of an electric bike rental service in Lahore as part of its strategy to promote environmentally friendly and modern urban transport.

According to officials, the project will be introduced in phases, with 10,000 electric bikes planned for deployment in the first phase across the provincial capital.

Docking and Charging Stations Planned Across City

To support the service, around 300 docking and charging stations will be established at key locations throughout Lahore. The Punjab Housing Authority will provide land for these stations.

Officials said the stations will be set up near major residential and commercial areas, as well as close to public transport hubs, to improve last-mile connectivity for commuters.

Multi-Department Collaboration

The project will be implemented through a coordinated effort involving the Lahore Parking Company (LePark), the Transport Department, the Punjab Safe City Authority, and other relevant government institutions.

Authorities said the collaboration will help ensure effective monitoring, secure operations, and smooth integration with existing urban transport systems.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Officials believe the electric bike service will significantly reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption in Lahore. The project is also expected to cut carbon emissions by thousands of tonnes annually, contributing to efforts to control air pollution and smog in the city.

Punjab Housing Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal said the initiative would provide an affordable and convenient transport option for students, office workers, and daily commuters, while also lowering transportation costs.

He added that the Punjab government is focusing on modern, sustainable solutions to improve environmental conditions and reduce the impact of smog across the province.

App-Based Rental System

Citizens will be able to rent electric bikes through a dedicated mobile application, allowing users to locate nearby bikes, unlock them digitally, and pay electronically.

Officials said further details regarding pricing, routes, and rollout timelines will be shared closer to the official launch of the service.

The electric bike rental project is part of a broader push by the Punjab government to modernize urban mobility and encourage the use of clean energy transport solutions in major cities.
