Yousaf Raza Gilani gets clean chit in Senate election video scandal

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) acquitted Yousaf Raza Gilani on Friday, dismissing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-(PTI) Insaf’s petition for the disqualification of the PPP leader from the Senate seat.

The commission announced its decision today, stating that no evidence was found against Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The ECP, on the other hand, has directed the District Election Commissioner Islamabad to take action against Ali Haider Gilani, MNA Faheem Khan, and Jamil Ahmad Khan for their involvement in corrupt practices.

Last year, the PTI petitioned the Supreme Court for the disqualification of PPP Senator-elect Yousuf Raza Gilani, requesting that the electoral body halt the issuance of the notification confirming Gilani’s victory on a general seat from Islamabad in the Senate elections.

Farrukh Habib, Maleeka Bokhari, and Kanwal Shauzab of the PTI filed the petition.

The lawmakers based their complaint on a contentious audio clip of Sindh minister Nasir Hussain Shah allegedly bargaining with four PTI lawmakers for their votes in the Senate elections, as well as a video of Ali Haider Gilani allegedly explaining to some PTI MNAs how to waste their votes.

In a shocking turn of events, the PPP senator defeated the PTI candidate Hafeez Sheikh, sparking a debate in political circles about the cracks in the then-ruling coalition, which had a majority in the National Assembly.

Later, the then-prime minister, Imran Khan, took a vote of confidence from the assembly to demonstrate that he still has the majority’s support.
