Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday announced that the Government of Punjab will provide free land and housing support to citizens who do not own property as part of an expanded welfare housing programme.
Speaking at a ceremony in Lahore during the distribution of residential flats to labourers, she congratulated the beneficiaries and said that home ownership remains one of the strongest foundations of dignity, stability, and social security for working families.
Rising inflation has made housing difficult
Maryam Nawaz said that rising inflation, increasing construction costs, and continued economic pressure have made it extremely difficult for ordinary citizens to build their own homes.
She said the government is now directly providing housing instead of relying on loan-based systems, especially for labourers and daily wage earners who are most affected by rising living costs. She added that each residential flat being distributed under the programme has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3.5 million and is being handed over completely free of charge to deserving families.
Housing delivery figures shared at the ceremony
The chief minister shared details of ongoing housing progress and said that 720 residential flats are being distributed in the first phase of the programme. She also noted that construction work on 500 houses in Taxila is close to completion. She further stated that nearly 100,000 houses have already been completed under the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar initiative, which aims to expand access to affordable shelter across Punjab.
Free land allocation announced for the first time
Maryam Nawaz also announced that the provincial government will provide free land to citizens who do not own any property. She described the initiative as a long term step to reduce housing inequality and improve access to basic shelter for low-income groups.
She said the policy is being designed with a focus on transparency and fair selection. She added that the aim is to prevent land misuse and ensure that labourers and vulnerable families receive priority under the scheme.
Government focus on long term welfare expansion
The chief minister said the Punjab government remains committed to expanding housing facilities and strengthening welfare programmes for low-income and deserving citizens. She said that housing, healthcare, and social protection are central pillars of the province’s development strategy.
She added that more housing schemes will be introduced across Punjab in the coming months to ensure wider access to safe and affordable living conditions for all eligible families.
