iPhone 17 Becomes World’s Best-Selling Smartphone in Early 2026

Apple’s latest flagship has taken a commanding lead in the global smartphone market, with the iPhone 17 emerging as the world’s best-selling handset in early 2026, according to new industry data.

The device secured the top position in global unit sales during the first quarter of 2026, capturing around 6 percent of worldwide shipments, based on Counterpoint Research’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker.

The performance underscores Apple’s continued dominance in the premium smartphone segment, where brand loyalty and ecosystem integration continue to drive strong consumer demand.

Close behind, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro secured second and third positions, respectively, reinforcing Apple’s grip on the upper end of the market. Analysts say the ranking shows how Apple has successfully expanded its premium lineup while still maintaining strong appeal for its base model.

Interestingly, the iPhone 16 also remained in demand, ranking sixth globally. This suggests that even older Apple models continue to attract buyers, particularly in price-sensitive markets where discounts and trade-in offers remain popular.

According to Counterpoint senior analyst Harshit Rastogi, the success of the iPhone 17 is largely driven by meaningful upgrades in the standard model rather than just Pro variants. These include a higher 256GB base storage option, an improved camera system, and a smoother 120Hz display refresh rate.

Together, these enhancements have narrowed the performance gap between standard and Pro models, making the entry-level flagship more attractive to a wider audience.

The iPhone 17 recorded double-digit year-on-year growth in both the United States and China, two of Apple’s most important markets. In South Korea, sales reportedly tripled during the quarter, reflecting unusually strong demand in a highly competitive and mature smartphone market.

Official data from Counterpoint Research indicates that the top 10 smartphones accounted for 25 percent of total global sales in the first quarter of 2026, the highest concentration ever recorded for a Q1 period. This points to increasing market consolidation, where a small number of flagship and value-driven models dominate global shipments.

Samsung remained Apple’s strongest competitor in the mid-range and budget segment. The Samsung Galaxy A07 4G emerged as the best-selling Android device of the quarter, reflecting continued global demand for affordable smartphones.

Meanwhile, the Redmi A5 also secured a place in the top 10, highlighting the importance of entry-level devices in emerging markets.

Analysis suggests that Apple’s latest performance reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour, where buyers are increasingly willing to pay for incremental upgrades in performance, storage, and camera technology. The narrowing gap between base and Pro models has also helped Apple capture a larger share of mid-premium buyers who previously opted for older devices or competitors.

“The iPhone 17’s success shows that consumers are prioritising balanced upgrades rather than extreme differentiation between models,” said a mobile industry analyst tracking global shipments. “Apple has effectively repositioned its base model as a near-flagship device.”

Overall, the strong performance of the iPhone 17 lineup reinforces Apple’s dominance in the global smartphone hierarchy, while also signalling a more concentrated and competitive market where a handful of models now drive a significant share of global sales.
