Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a plan to provide electric bikes to government employees up to BPS-16 on easy instalment plans as part of a broader push to accelerate electric vehicle adoption across Pakistan.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to review progress and future measures aimed at promoting electric mobility nationwide.
Push for electric mobility
Officials briefed the meeting that the government aims to shift 30 percent of all vehicles to electric power within the next five years, a move projected to reduce Pakistan’s fuel import bill by approximately $4.5 billion.
The prime minister emphasized that expanding the use of electric vehicles would not only lower fuel imports but also support environmental objectives and strengthen long-term energy security amid rising future demand.
Transparent subsidies and faster rollout

Shehbaz Sharif directed relevant departments to accelerate EV-related initiatives and ensure that subsidies for electric motorbikes under the National EV Policy are implemented transparently.
He stressed that timely execution of incentive schemes is critical to encouraging adoption among public-sector employees and the wider population.
Manufacturing and charging infrastructure update
During the briefing, officials revealed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four certificates have been granted for electric cars.
In addition, 123 applications have been received for establishing EV charging stations across Pakistan, signaling growing private-sector interest in supporting electric mobility infrastructure.
Broader impact
The instalment-based electric bike scheme for government employees is expected to serve as a catalyst for wider EV adoption, helping reduce urban pollution, lower transportation costs, and create momentum for Pakistan’s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable transport.
