WhatsApp Testing New Feature to Show Which Contacts Are Online

WhatsApp Guest Chats Feature Explained: Message Non-Users Without Installing the App

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that could change how users track contact availability, as the messaging app begins testing a system that shows which contacts are currently online — all without opening individual conversations.

Sources familiar with the update say the feature introduces a centralized view of active contacts, allowing users to instantly identify who is online at a given moment. Until now, WhatsApp has limited online visibility to individual chats, where the status appears under a contact’s name, while group chats rely on a small green indicator to show active members.

The new interface is being developed for the Android beta version and is expected to offer a cleaner, more streamlined experience than similar tools on rival platforms. While the layout resembles the “active users” concept seen in Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp’s version focuses on simplicity and minimal interaction.

As the feature remains under development, it is not yet available to all beta testers, and there is no official timeline for a wider rollout. However, once launched, the update could make real-time communication faster and more intuitive by removing unnecessary steps in checking a contact’s online status.

The experiment reflects WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to refine its user experience and introduce practical enhancements aimed at everyday communication needs.
