A Chinese technology firm says it has developed a nuclear-powered battery capable of generating electricity for decades, a breakthrough that could fundamentally change how electronic devices are powered in the digital era.

According to published reports, Beijing Betavolt New Energy Technology Company Ltd has unveiled a compact nuclear battery designed to operate continuously for up to 50 years without needing replacement or recharging. If validated at scale, the innovation could overcome one of modern technology’s most persistent challenges: limited battery life.

How Nuclear Batteries Generate Power

Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, nuclear batteries produce electricity from the energy released during radioactive decay.

Betavolt’s scientists reportedly used the Nickel-63 isotope, pairing it with a diamond-based semiconductor to convert decay energy into a stable and usable electrical current.

This method allows the battery to deliver a consistent flow of power over extremely long periods, making it suitable for applications where reliability and longevity are critical.

Small Size, Major Implications

Despite its extended lifespan, the nuclear battery is said to be compact in size, opening the door to a wide range of potential uses. Experts say such technology could be deployed in fields including artificial intelligence hardware, aerospace systems, medical devices, and even consumer electronics.

The development has sparked discussion about a future where devices—possibly even smartphones and wearables—may no longer require frequent charging, dramatically improving convenience and device longevity.

Global Race for Long-Lasting Power

China is not alone in pursuing nuclear battery technology. In the United States, California-based Infinity Power, with backing from the US Department of Defense, has announced progress on a similar concept.

Infinity Power claims its coin-sized nuclear battery can generate tens of milliwatts of electricity for more than 100 years, underscoring the intensifying global competition to develop maintenance-free, ultra-long-life energy solutions.

A Potential Shift in Power Technology

If these claims are proven commercially viable and meet safety and regulatory standards, nuclear batteries could reshape multiple industries. By providing reliable, long-term power without traditional charging systems, they may significantly extend the lifespan of electronic devices and reduce dependence on conventional energy storage technologies.
