Pakistani Oil Tanker Reaches Home After Strait of Hormuz Transit

A Pakistani oil tanker, MT Karachi, carrying approximately 80 million litres of crude oil, has reached Pakistan’s maritime zone after successfully transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

The vessel is now en route to berth at the Port of Karachi on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

First transit after Strait closure

The development marks the first known passage of a Pakistani vessel through the Strait of Hormuz since its closure by Iran amid escalating tensions with the United States and Israel.

Iran had restricted access to the critical waterway following military strikes, raising concerns over global oil supply disruptions and maritime security in the region.

Officials said Iranian authorities granted special permission to MT Karachi, allowing it to pass through Iranian territorial waters during its journey.

Navy ensures safe passage

The Pakistan Navy provided security escort to the tanker as it navigated the sensitive corridor, ensuring safe transit through the high-risk zone.

The vessel had departed from Das Island in the United Arab Emirates on February 28.

Yuan payment highlights shifting trade patterns

According to international reports, the crude oil cargo aboard MT Karachi was paid for in Chinese yuan, reflecting a growing shift toward alternative currency arrangements in regional energy trade.

Analysts say such moves could gain momentum as geopolitical tensions reshape traditional payment systems and supply chains in global oil markets.

Strategic significance amid crisis

The successful transit underscores both the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and the challenges faced by energy-importing countries like Pakistan during regional instability.

With tensions still high, the safe arrival of MT Karachi offers temporary relief for Pakistan’s energy supply concerns while raising concerns about the fragile nature of global oil logistics in times of conflict.
