Punjab Govt Approves Rs523 Million VIP Vehicle Purchase

The Government of Punjab has approved the procurement of new vehicles for VIP use at an estimated cost of Rs523.5 million, according to official documents cited by 24News.

The purchase includes 20 units of the Toyota Fortuner and 12 units of the Toyota Hilux. The Fortuner fleet is expected to cost Rs372.7 million, while the Hilux vehicles will account for Rs112.6 million.

Security upgrades to raise overall cost

In addition to the base purchase, the government has allocated further funds to equip the vehicles with advanced security features. These upgrades are set to include night-vision systems, thermal imaging cameras, and other modern surveillance and protection technologies.

Officials say the enhancements are aimed at improving the safety and operational capability of VIP transport.

Finance department raised concerns

The proposal reportedly faced resistance from the provincial finance department, which objected to the inclusion of Fortuner vehicles, classifying them as luxury items.

Despite these concerns, the plan moved forward after receiving approval from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who endorsed the recommendations submitted by the transport wing.

Decision clears way for procurement

With the chief minister’s approval, the procurement process is expected to proceed, including the acquisition of vehicles and installation of specialized security equipment.

The development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of government spending priorities, particularly in the context of broader fiscal constraints.
