Punjab to Upgrade High Schools to Higher Secondary Level

Punjab to Upgrade High Schools to Higher Secondary Level

The Punjab government has decided to upgrade hundreds of high schools across the province to the higher secondary level, enabling students to complete FA and FSC education at the same institutions, officials said.

Relevant education authorities have sought detailed data from schools across Punjab as part of the process to identify institutions eligible for the upgrade. The move is aimed at expanding access to higher secondary education and reducing pressure on existing colleges.

Officials said the decision will be based on an assessment of available space and whether current school buildings meet the requirements for higher secondary classes. School principals have been directed to submit comprehensive reports detailing infrastructure, enrollment capacity, and facilities.

In addition to the documentation submitted by schools, authorities said third-party inspections will be conducted to independently evaluate each institution before granting higher secondary status.

Punjab currently has around 6,000 high schools. Officials said approximately 5,800 schools have already submitted the required data, with 795 expressing interest in being upgraded, subject to the availability of adequate space on their campuses.

Education officials said the submitted information and inspection findings will be reviewed before a final list of schools approved for higher secondary status is announced. The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen the province’s education system and improve continuity for students after matriculation.
