Petrol Prices Trigger Possible Punjab Metro Bus Fare Hike

Petrol Prices Trigger Possible Punjab Metro Bus Fare Hike

A rise in petrol prices across Pakistan may soon lead to higher transport fares, with authorities considering a fare hike for the Punjab Metro Bus services operating in major cities.

Officials familiar with the matter say the surge in fuel costs has placed additional pressure on government subsidies used to run Metro Bus operations. As a result, a proposal is under review to increase Punjab Metro Bus fares by Rs10 in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi.

If approved, the fare would rise from the current Rs30 per ride, adding to the daily expenses of thousands of commuters who rely on the Punjab Metro Bus for affordable urban transport.

Why Are Punjab Metro Bus Fares Increasing?

According to officials, the proposed increase is directly linked to the recent sharp hike in petrol and diesel prices, which has significantly raised operational costs.

The government currently provides heavy subsidies to keep Metro Bus fares low, but rising fuel expenses have made this increasingly difficult to sustain.

Authorities are reportedly discussing March 26 as a possible date for implementing the revised fares, though they have clarified that no final decision has been taken yet.

A Metro Bus spokesperson said discussions are ongoing and that any fare adjustment will be announced officially once approved.

Petrol Prices Driving Transport Fare Pressure

The potential fare hike follows a recent decision by the Government of Pakistan to increase petrol and diesel prices by Rs55 per litre, citing supply constraints and heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Petrol prices rose from Rs266.17 to Rs321.17 per litre, while diesel prices increased from Rs280.86 to around Rs336 per litre. The adjustment reflects broader energy challenges and efforts to align domestic fuel rates with global market conditions.

What This Means for Commuters

If the proposal is approved, commuters across Punjab may face higher public transport fares at a time when inflation and fuel costs are already squeezing household budgets. Students, office workers, and low-income earners are expected to be the most affected.

For now, officials stress that the fare hike remains under consideration, and commuters are advised to watch for an official announcement in the coming days.
