MNA Chaudhry Hussain Elahi, son of Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, has been nominated by the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.
Following the resignations of PTI members from the lower house of parliament, the party leadership decided to nominate Hussain Elahi.
Hussain told the media at his Lahore residence on Monday that the PML-Q has always battled for Pakistan’s and its people’s rights. “We cannot leave Pakistan in the hands of this ‘imported government,’ which also wants to be the opposition leader,” he added, adding that his party will not let the government to prevail under any circumstances.
He stated that his party supported ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan and accused the PML-N-led coalition government of attempting to create a “rubber stamp opposition” in the NA. “They [the government] aim to bring in an opposition that has remained in the Sindh House… Lawmakers who defected will join the incumbent government’s ticket for the next elections.”
He requested that the judiciary take action against PTI dissident lawmakers, saying that the custom of floor-crossing should be ended.
He also echoed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s claim that a foreign plot was hatched to destabilise the PTI-led government. The PML-Q leader stated that the party was in contact with the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) on the opposition leader’s nomination.
He went on to say that the existing dictatorship sought to elect a “puppet” opposition from among the dissidents who had joined it so that it could do its bidding in the National Assembly on legislation and other problems.
The government’s assumption of the office of opposition leader, according to Hussain Elahi, is in fact opposed to democratic values. “This vested interest group also wants one man show for many major posts in the future, which we will not accept under any circumstances, and we will do everything we can to prevent them from violating people’s rights.”
He went on to say that the PML-Q is unquestionably the people’s party. “As usual, we will be a barricade against these imported groups that continue to pose a threat to Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity.”
