Punjab Unemployment Rate Hits 7.3% as Job Crisis Deepens

The unemployment rate in Punjab has risen in recent years, highlighting growing concerns about the job market and employment opportunities in Pakistan’s most populous province.

Official statistics show that the jobless rate increased by around 0.6 percent over the past four years. During the 2020–21 fiscal year, the unemployment rate stood at 6.7 percent.

However, in the current fiscal year, the figure has climbed to 7.3 percent, reflecting mounting pressure on the labour market.

Data indicates that while the labour force in Punjab has continued to expand, the pace of job creation has remained slow, resulting in a widening gap between available workers and employment opportunities.

Growing Concerns Over Punjab’s Job Market

Economists and policymakers are increasingly concerned about the rising unemployment rate in Punjab, as the province struggles to generate sufficient jobs to absorb the growing workforce.

The increase in the labour force without corresponding employment growth is putting additional strain on the provincial economy.

Punjab Government Forms Special Cell to Boost Employment

In response to the situation, the Punjab government has set up a special employment cell aimed at developing strategies to create more job opportunities.

The initiative will include leading economists, labour market experts, and job sector specialists to help design policies focused on economic growth and employment generation.

Sources say the provincial administration is preparing a range of policy measures and development programs to encourage investment, support businesses, and improve the overall employment landscape in Punjab.

The government hopes these efforts will help reduce unemployment, strengthen the labour market, and create sustainable job opportunities for the province’s growing workforce.
