The Lahore High Court has issued a contempt of court notice to Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali over non-compliance in the ongoing tree-cutting controversy.
The notice came after the court expressed dissatisfaction with the Vice Chancellor’s response regarding the university’s failure to implement a proper tree transplant policy.
During Friday’s hearing, Justice Shahid Karim extended the stay orders on the Sheranwala and Taxali Gate development projects until the next hearing. The court emphasized the urgency of formulating a tree transplant policy to prevent further environmental damage.
The hearing included appearances by Punjab University Law Officer Dr. Ali Nawaz, legal advisor Shahzad Shaukat, and other officials.
Syed Kamal Haider, a member of the Environmental Commission, submitted a report highlighting steps taken under the commission’s supervision and suggestions from the WWF for compliance with the court’s directives.
He also noted delays in execution due to the absence of PHA lawyers on weekends, suggesting work should continue on Sundays.
Despite the vice chancellor submitting a formal reply to the contempt proceedings, the court remained unsatisfied, prompting the issuance of a formal notice. The case has now been adjourned until February 27.
This latest development highlights ongoing scrutiny of environmental compliance in Punjab, particularly the need for stricter policies to preserve urban greenery amid city development projects.
