Punjab Enforces New Teacher Dress Code, Black Gowns Made Mandatory in Government Schools

The Punjab government has introduced a new standardized dress code for teachers in all government schools, requiring educators to wear black gowns during teaching hours as part of efforts to improve discipline and professional appearance in public educational institutions.

According to official directives issued by the School Education Department Punjab, the policy will be enforced across the province starting February 23, making compliance mandatory for all teachers working in government-run schools.

Under the updated guidelines, teachers must wear black gowns while conducting classes. Male teachers have been advised to dress in simple shalwar kameez or trousers with shirts, while female teachers are required to wear modest and appropriate attire that reflects professional standards.

The notification also instructs educators to wear closed shoes or suitable sandals to maintain a dignified and disciplined school environment. Education authorities said the move aims to ensure uniformity, improve classroom decorum, and reinforce a professional culture within public schools.

School heads have been made directly responsible for monitoring daily compliance with the new teacher dress code, while chief executive officers have been directed to oversee strict implementation at the district level.

Officials emphasized that the new dress policy will be applied uniformly across all government schools in Punjab and that any violations may lead to administrative action.
