Kite-Flying Association Plans to Celebrate Basant Again

Lahore Basant 2026: Over Rs2 Billion in Kite Sales Amid Festival Return

The All Pakistan Kite-Flying Association (APKFA) has expressed optimism that Basant will return in March following the safe and successful celebration of the festival in Lahore.

Speaking at a press conference, Patron-in-Chief Aqeel Malik highlighted that the revival of Basant not only restored Lahore’s cultural heritage but also generated over Rs 20 billion in economic activity across the city. Citizens aged 10 to 70 were seen flying kites from rooftops, reflecting widespread enthusiasm for the event.

Malik credited Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for supporting the festival, emphasizing that government backing was essential for its successful revival. He added that Basant is not just a cultural celebration but also a significant economic driver, benefiting local businesses, transport services, and small traders.

During the festival, around 900,000 vehicles entered Lahore from surrounding cities, while nearly 200,000 people utilized public transport services, including the Orange Line Metro Train and Metro Bus.

Malik noted that strict adherence to safety SOPs helped ensure a smooth festival, with no reported injuries from kite strings and protective rods on motorcycles successfully preventing accidents.

However, Malik criticized illegal profiteering, stating that sellers of bamboo, paper, and kites had inflated prices. Daily transport fares, which previously cost around Rs 3,000, reportedly surged to Rs 35,000 during the festival. The association has compiled a list of vendors charging excessive rates to curb such practices.

Looking ahead, Malik said the government plans to expand Basant celebrations across Punjab next year, with official pricing for kites and strings to prevent exploitation.

He expressed hope that Basant 2027 would be even safer, better regulated, and continue to promote Lahore’s cultural and economic vitality.
