Punjab CM Approves Plan to Divide Lahore Into Two Districts to Improve Governance

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has given in-principle approval to divide Lahore into two separate districts, marking a major administrative reform aimed at improving governance and service delivery in the provincial capital.

According to provincial government officials, the restructuring process will begin after the Basant festival, with preparations already underway.

Decision Aimed at Reducing Administrative Pressure

Officials said Lahore’s rapidly growing population and expanding urban footprint have placed heavy pressure on the existing administrative system. The division is intended to:

  • Improve governance efficiency

  • Speed up complaint resolution

  • Enhance monitoring of municipal services

By creating two districts, authorities expect more localized and responsive administration.

Separate Administration for Each New District

Under the new plan, each district will have its own:

  • Deputy Commissioner (DC)

  • Police administration

  • Municipal management system

The government will also redraw administrative boundaries to ensure balanced population distribution and smoother service delivery.

Focus on Traffic, Encroachments, and Municipal Services

Authorities believe the division will help tackle long-standing urban challenges more effectively, including:

  • Traffic congestion

  • Illegal encroachments

  • Sanitation and waste management

  • Urban infrastructure maintenance

With smaller administrative jurisdictions, officials will be able to focus on area-specific problems more efficiently.

Departments Directed to Prepare for Transition

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed all relevant departments to complete operational and legal preparations for the transition. The goal, officials said, is to ensure a smooth shift without disrupting public services.

The government emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to modernize urban governance and improve quality of life for Lahore’s residents.
