Asghar Mall College Rawalpindi Declared National Heritage Site by Government

Rawalpindi: The Government of Pakistan has officially recognized Government Graduate College Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi, as a national heritage site, honoring its historical, educational, and cultural significance, announced Minister for National Heritage and Culture, Aurangzeb Khan Khichi, on Tuesday.

Addressing a ceremony at the college, the minister stated that a formal event will soon be organized to officially confer the heritage status. He described the college as a living symbol of knowledge, character, and Pakistan’s cultural legacy, highlighting its pivotal role in the educational development of the Potohar region.

Ministry Offers Support for Education and Cultural Initiatives

Minister Khichi emphasized the importance of education for national progress, citing Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s message to students. He urged students to act as ambassadors of Pakistan abroad and project a positive image of the country.

The minister invited the college administration to enter into cooperation agreements with cultural institutions under the ministry and assured full support for initiatives aimed at promoting academic and cultural activities. He also confirmed that the college will be granted access to the ministry’s platforms free of cost to showcase educational and heritage-related programs.

Pioneering Archaeology Classes Introduced

College Principal Professor Dr. Tanveer Ahmed Khan Khichi announced the launch of archaeology classes, describing it as a pioneering initiative at the college level.

The program aims to cultivate student interest in heritage conservation and historical studies. The minister also assured support from the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums to strengthen such academic and cultural programs.

A Legacy of Over a Century

Constructed in 1913, the college’s main building reflects the architectural and cultural heritage of the Potohar region. Originally founded in 1903 as Sanatana Dharma High School, it was elevated to college status in 1948, becoming the first public-sector college in the area. Over the years, it has nurtured generations of students who have contributed to public service, academia, and professional sectors nationwide.

Preserving Historic Educational Institutions

The heritage designation of Asghar Mall College aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to preserve historic educational buildings. Officials stated that the recognition will facilitate conservation of the college’s century-old architecture while enhancing its role as a functional academic institution. The status is also expected to support future restoration projects, cultural research, and heritage-based educational tourism.
