The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially postponed Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches following the death of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, a towering political figure and a long-time supporter of cricket in the country.
Two BPL matches in Sylhet—Sylhet Titans vs Chattogram Royals and Dhaka Capitals vs Rangpur Riders—have been rescheduled to January 4, 2026, the BCB confirmed in an official announcement.
BPL Matches Postponed Hours Before Toss in Sylhet
The decision to postpone the BPL fixtures came just hours before the toss at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, after news emerged early Tuesday morning that Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am local time.
In line with a government-declared public holiday, the BCB also announced that no BPL matches will be played on December 31. However, matches scheduled for January 1 and January 2 in Sylhet will proceed as planned.

Khaleda Zia’s Impact on Bangladesh Cricket
Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh’s first female prime minister, serving two terms between 1991–1996 and 2001–2006. She was the wife of former president Zia-ur-Rahman and served as chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) from 1984.
In a tribute statement, the Bangladesh Cricket Board acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s contribution to cricket development in Bangladesh, highlighting her role in improving cricket infrastructure and promoting the sport nationwide.
BCB President Aminul Islam stated that Zia’s vision for sports development, along with initiatives led by her late son Arafat Rahman, played a crucial role in modernising Bangladesh cricket and strengthening domestic cricket facilities.
Impact on BPL 2025–26 Season and Domestic Cricket
The BPL 2025–26 season began on December 26, with three matchdays already completed. Despite the postponements, officials expect minimal disruption to the overall BPL schedule, as the tournament includes built-in breaks between fixtures.
Separately, the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) has also postponed nine Dhaka First Division Cricket League matches that were scheduled between December 30 and January 1. Revised fixtures will be announced shortly.
