The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is planning a major update to its player recruitment rules ahead of the PSL 2026 season, with officials considering the introduction of direct player signings alongside the existing draft system.
If approved, the move would mark one of the most significant structural changes in PSL history, aimed at giving franchises greater flexibility while preserving the league’s competitive balance.
How Direct Signings Could Work in PSL 2026
Under the proposed plan for PSL 2026, a separate PSL player pool would be created exclusively for direct signings. Each PSL franchise would be allowed to sign up to two players directly from this pool.
Unlike the PSL draft, there would be no salary cap on these direct signings, allowing teams to freely negotiate contracts and target marquee domestic or international stars.
PSL Draft System to Remain Central
Despite this possible change, the PSL draft system will continue as the primary recruitment method. The direct signing option would act as an additional mechanism, not a replacement.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) believes the draft has been a key reason for the competitive balance in PSL, preventing wealthier franchises from dominating weaker teams.
Why PSL Is Not Adopting a Full Auction System
Some PSL franchises have previously pushed for an IPL-style auction, arguing it would increase excitement and allow teams to spend more aggressively to attract global stars.
However, PCB officials remain firm that a full auction could create financial inequality among PSL teams and weaken competition. Instead, the hybrid draft-plus-direct-signing model is being explored as a middle ground.
PSL 11 to Be the Biggest Season Yet
The upcoming PSL 11 season in 2026 is expected to be the largest in the league’s history. The Pakistan Super League will expand to eight teams, with two new PSL franchises scheduled to be auctioned in Islamabad on January 8.
The expansion is expected to boost viewership, sponsorship interest, and player opportunities across the PSL ecosystem.
Foreign Player Registration for PSL 2026 Open
The foreign player registration window for PSL 2026 is currently open, allowing international cricketers to register for the expanded tournament. With more teams and the possibility of direct signings, PSL is set to offer more slots and higher earnings for overseas players.
What This Means for the Future of PSL
The proposed changes highlight PSL’s ambition to evolve while protecting its core strengths. By blending the structure of the draft with limited flexibility for direct signings, the Pakistan Super League aims to remain competitive, commercially strong, and globally attractive.
