The federal government has announced the extension of the electronic vehicle tagging system to motorcycles in Islamabad as part of the next phase of its digital vehicle monitoring programme.
This change is meant to strengthen security surveillance, improve traffic discipline, and enhance law enforcement in the capital.
RFID-based E-Tag readers are being installed at key locations across the city to support the expanded system, as revealed by a written reply submitted by the district administration to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.
The project is being implemented by Safe City Islamabad in coordination with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) under the supervision of Islamabad Police. The system will allow real-time monitoring and tracking of tagged vehicles across the capital.

The Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control, along with the ICT Administration and FWO, has launched a broader initiative to improve vehicle screening and entry management in Islamabad. As part of this effort, multiple M Tag and E Tag issuance centres and booths have been set up to facilitate vehicle registration and verification.
Officials said FWO has provided the technical infrastructure for the project, including system deployment and operational support at all issuance centres.
The E-Tag system has also been integrated with the Excise and Taxation Department in Islamabad, enabling real-time data sharing through a secure and encrypted network.
The installation drive for M Tags and E Tags began on November 14, 2025. As of December 7, 2025, a total of 63,329 vehicles have been equipped with electronic tags.
Officials said extending the tagging system to motorcycles will help close existing gaps in surveillance, improve monitoring of vehicle movement, and further strengthen security arrangements in the federal capital.
