QUETTA: The Balochistan government has requested a review of its decision to hold local body elections in the province on May 29.
The provincial government has delivered a handout to the secretary election commission and provincial election commissioner, requesting that the ECP reconsider its decision to hold local government elections on May 29.
According to the handout, the decision was made following consultation with the provincial cabinet on April 02.
Shehbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), demanded two days ago that the Balochistan local government (LG) elections be postponed due to the country’s current political situation.
Shehbaz Sharif stated in a statement that while Balochistan’s legislative elections have been announced, the province’s political leaders are currently occupied in Islamabad.
He wrote to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) requesting that the Balochistan Legislative Assembly elections be postponed. It should be noted that the ECP had announced that LG elections would be held on May 29 in all Balochistan districts except Quetta and Lasbela.
Earlier in March, the ECP approved the schedule for Balochistan’s LG elections. The commission had decided to hold LG elections in all districts of Balochistan on May 29, with the exception of Quetta and Lasbela, due to new constituency delimitations.
The election schedule for the remaining districts will be announced following the completion of the delimitation process.
