On April 3, Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif submitted a letter to the Interior Secretary requesting that all legislators be provided with security.
According to reports, the opposition leader demanded that the interior secretary provide failsafe protection for all National Assembly members on April 3—the day of the no-confidence vote.
“It is the interior secretary’s legal responsibility to provide protection to all legislators,” the letter states.
Shehbaz Sharif also highlighted Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement in the letter about summoning in 100,000 party workers on the day of the no-confidence vote.
The PML-N president also forwarded a copy of the letter to the commissioner of police in Islamabad, the deputy commissioner, and the inspector general of police.
Earlier, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Ahmed Chaudhry tweeted about beefing up Prime Minister Imran Khan’s security to prevent his assassination.
The communications minister maintained that security agency reports revealed a plan to assassinate the prime minister.
“Following these reports, the administration has decided to step up the prime minister’s protection,” he had added.
It is worth noting that the administration of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appears to have been fighting for its existence in the face of the opposition’s efforts to make the no-confidence vote successful.
The much-discussed no-trust move has now degenerated into a political squabble, with the prime minister accusing it of being a foreign-imported plot to destabilise the country.
