The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), in collaboration with PTCL, Transworld, Nayatel, Cybernet, and Wateen, has launched a six-month free Wi-Fi hotspot initiative at selected HEC-recognised universities, including women’s universities.
Also, 200 locally assembled smartphones, contributed by mobile manufacturers, will be distributed to female SIM card holders through a computerised ballot across Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).
PTA reiterated its commitment to connecting Pakistan and digitally empowering the nation.
The announcement coincides with a major milestone in Pakistan’s telecom history, as the number of telecom subscribers has surpassed 200 million.
This includes over 125 million broadband users and 15 million FTTH (fibre to the Home) connections.
To mark this achievement, PTA and mobile operators are offering 2 GB of free data and 200 on-net minutes to all subscribers on June 20, 2025. Users can activate the package by dialling *2200#.
Moreover, a broader Digital Outreach Program has been launched with PTCL, Ufone, and the Ministry of IT to establish internet setups and distribute free laptops at selected universities in Balochistan and merged districts.
