Earthquake rattles various places in Punjab

A huge earthquake rattled a number of locations in Punjab on Friday morning as people were heading to their jobs and schools.

The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale, occurred primarily near Burewala in Vehari District. At 7:54 a.m., a quake was detected at a shallow depth of 20 kilometres beneath the surface.

The earthquake’s epicentre was 12 kilometres from Burewala in Okara. People hurried out of their homes, reciting verses from the Holy Quran.

According to the Volcano Discovery website, the quake should not have caused any serious damage based on preliminary seismic data, although it was likely felt by many people as a gentle vibration in the epicentre area.

Burewala, 12 km from the epicentre, Vehari, Mian Channu, Pakpattan, Renala Khurd, Hujra Shah Muqeem, Sira-e-Mughal, Chichawatni, Arifwala, Chishtian, and Kamalia, 60 km away, may have felt weak shaking.
