OpenAI brings ChatGPT to WhatsApp.
OpenAI has increased the reach of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, by launching two new features: global integration with WhatsApp and a free phone service for users in the US.
“12 Days of Christmas”
As part of its “12 Days of Christmas” updates, OpenAI now allows US-based users to call ChatGPT at 1-800-CHATGPT, offering up to 15 minutes of free call time per month per phone number.
Meanwhile, users outside the US can message ChatGPT through WhatsApp using the number 1-800-242-8478.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, described the initiative as a “stepping stone for AI newcomers” during a recent livestream, emphasising its goal of providing a user-friendly entry point into AI technology.

The phone service is powered by OpenAI’s Realtime API, while the WhatsApp feature runs on GPT-4o mini, integrated with the WhatsApp API.
Both services aim to make AI more accessible, particularly for less tech-savvy users.
Different from web-based platform
OpenAI highlighted that these experimental features differ from its traditional web-based platform.
Existing users seeking advanced customisation and higher limits are encouraged to continue using ChatGPT’s main platform.
OpenAI’s WhatsApp integration leverages the platform’s two billion active users to connect with a global audience, making ChatGPT more familiar and accessible.

Unlike similar past projects, such as Google’s GOOG-411, OpenAI clarified that no user data from these interactions will be used to train its AI models, addressing privacy concerns.
US users can access the phone service now, while WhatsApp messaging is available globally.
OpenAI is checking responses to adapt its offerings further.
