Islamabad apologizes for raid on North Korea embassy

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said on Thursday that Islamabad has “apologized” for the incident that occurred due to a “misunderstanding” after North Korea accused Islamabad Police of breaking the Vienna Convention following a raid on the country’s embassy in the federal capital on March 7.

“We have apologized [to the North Korean mission], the incident was the result of a misunderstanding,” the interior minister told a press conference in Islamabad.

According to a story in The News, the embassy claimed in a letter to the Foreign Office and the IGP of Islamabad that police entered the mission’s premises from the backdoor at around 5 p.m. on March 7 and harassed its employees.

According to the letter, the mission personnel reminded them that the embassy was exercising the inviolable sovereign territory of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and asked them to immediately cease this violent act against the embassy.

According to the letter, the policeman examined the backyard storehouse under the guise of looking for something and threatened the mission workers with weapons if they tried to stop them.

The embassy’s property was also damaged, according to the letter.

The Foreign Office official responded by saying that the Islamabad Police had been informed that they did not have the power to enter the embassy without permission.

“They’ve also been told that they won’t be able to conduct such a raid again unless they get approval from the Foreign Office,” the official added.

The Islamabad Police have been raiding various locations in the Federal Capital in recent days without prior permission from relevant authorities.

Officers from the Islamabad Police Department admitted to entering the North Korean embassy and apologised for the breach of protocol.

The law enforcement officer who disobeyed the law, according to an Islamabad Police official, will face severe punishment.

The official continued, “We apologies for entering the embassy.” After receiving reports of a huge amount of liquor on the grounds, the Shalimar Police raided the North Korean Embassy, he claimed.
