Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), have reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating polio in Pakistan, one of the last two countries where the disease remains endemic.

Despite extensive efforts, the poliovirus continues to pose a significant public health challenge, particularly affecting malnourished and under-vaccinated children under five.

The virus can lead to paralysis and death, with vaccination being the most effective prevention method.

During their meeting in Islamabad, Bill Gates expressed optimism that sustained vaccination efforts and the Pakistani government’s dedication could bring the polio eradication campaign back on track, especially following a recent surge in environmental detections.

Gates emphasized the importance of data science and digital technology in improving public health and thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz for his ongoing commitment to eradicating polio.

Prime Minister Shehbaz briefed Gates on the government’s strides towards economic stability, digital financial services, expanded health coverage, and climate change adaptation, all while emphasizing the critical importance of polio eradication.

He highlighted the shared goals of the Pakistani government and the Gates Foundation, including closing the gender gap, enhancing food security, and boosting financial inclusion.

The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation for the Gates Foundation’s substantial support in these endeavors.

With four polio cases reported in Pakistan this year, including the latest in Shikarpur on June 1, Prime Minister Shehbaz outlined a comprehensive strategy to combat the disease.

He reassured that all state resources would be utilized to ensure the safety of polio workers and the success of the eradication program.

The Prime Minister committed to personally overseeing the national efforts until polio is eliminated from Pakistan.

Both leaders agreed to continue their collaboration to eradicate polio and to strengthen health systems across Pakistan, ensuring prosperity for all, especially women and girls.

The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s House, was a follow-up to an invitation extended by Prime Minister Shehbaz to Gates during their meeting at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh.
