CCTV footage captured the crime, showing three individuals, two of whom had their faces covered, exiting a police van and entering the pan shop.
The footage shows the men threatening the shopkeeper before forcefully entering the premises to steal products and cash.
SSP Aslam confirmed that the police van involved in the robbery was registered to DSP Zafar.
He added that efforts are ongoing to identify all suspects seen in the footage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that DSP Zafar’s son and his friends were directly involved in the robbery, with further efforts being made to apprehend additional accomplices.
This incident comes amid a concerning rise in crime rates in Karachi. In the first five months of 2024 alone, at least 71 individuals have been fatally shot by robbers.
An April crime report indicated that 6,780 street crime incidents occurred in Karachi within a single month.
The report detailed that 20 vehicles were snatched and over 130 stolen, along with 830 motorcycles being snatched and 4,200 stolen during Ramazan.
Additionally, 1,600 mobile phones were reported snatched.
In light of this alarming increase in street crime, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has issued directives for enhanced security measures and increased police monitoring in Karachi to ensure the protection of citizens’ lives and properties.
