Babar Azam admits mistakes after defeat in first WC match.
In a thrilling start to the 2024 T20 World Cup, Pakistan fell short against the USA in a dramatic Super Over at the Grand Prairie Stadium.
The USA emerged victorious by five runs.
Super Over Drama:
The match concluded in a nail-biting Super Over after both teams ended their innings with 159 runs.
Mohammad Amir, entrusted with bowling the Super Over for Pakistan, struggled with several wides and a couple of misfieldings, leading to wild overthrows.
This allowed the USA to set a challenging target of 18-1. Despite a valiant effort, Pakistan could only muster 13-1 in response, sealing their defeat.
Babar Azam Acknowledges Shortcomings:
Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, addressed the team’s performance candidly during the post-match presentation.
“We failed to capitalize in the first six overs. Back-to-back wickets always put you on the back foot. As a batter, you need to step up and build partnerships,” the 29-year-old skipper reflected.

He emphasized the importance of building momentum, which was lost due to the quick dismissal of key wickets.
“My partnership with Shadab was promising, but then two wickets fell. And we lost momentum again,” he explained, highlighting a critical juncture in the match where Pakistan’s recovery faltered.
Bowling and Middle Order Under Scrutiny:
Babar Azam pointed to areas needing improvement, particularly in the middle order and bowling.
“Our score was adequate for this pitch, but we need to enhance our bowling,” he noted.
The bowlers’ performance in the initial overs and the spinners’ inability to take wickets in the middle overs were cited as significant issues.
“These things cost us,” he remarked.
Conditions and Opposition Praise:
The captain also praised the USA team for their superior performance across all departments.
“All credit to the USA, they played better than us in all three departments,” he said.
Discussing the pitch conditions, Babar noted, “Little bit of moisture in the pitch, it was also two-paced. As a professional, you need to assess the conditions.”
Early Match Highlights:
In the regular innings, Pakistan managed to score 159/7, thanks in part to a disciplined performance by India-born left-arm pacer Saurabh Netravalkar, who took 2-18.
The USA’s chase ended dramatically with Nitish Kumar hitting a four off the last-ball full toss from Haris Rauf, leveling the scores at 159-3.
Super Over Details:
During the Super Over, Netravalkar bowled a wide but then had Iftikhar Ahmed brilliantly caught in the deep by Kumar.
With seven runs needed off the last ball, Shadab Khan couldn’t hit the required six to force a second Super Over, thus sealing Pakistan’s fate.
