Muslim nurse in US has been fired after calling Israel’s war in Gaza ‘genocide’.
NYU Langone Health has terminated Palestinian-American Muslim nurse Hesen Jabr following remarks she made during an acceptance speech in which she described the conflict in Gaza as a “genocide.”
The comments were made at an award ceremony recognizing her work with bereaved mothers.
Incident Overview:
Jabr, a labor and delivery nurse, received an award on May 7 for her compassionate care of mothers who had lost their children during pregnancy and childbirth.
During her acceptance speech, she spoke about the personal significance of the award, referencing the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
“It pains me to see the women from my country going through unimaginable losses themselves during the current genocide in Gaza,” Jabr stated in a video of the speech posted online.
Hospital’s Response:
A spokesperson for NYU Langone Health stated on Thursday that Jabr had previously been warned in December about bringing her views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into the workplace.
The spokesperson cited a prior incident but did not provide specific details.

“Following a previous incident, Ms. Jabr was warned not to bring her views on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace. She instead chose not to heed that at a recent employee recognition event that was widely attended by her colleagues, some of whom were upset after her comments,” the spokesperson explained.
“As a result, Jabr is no longer an NYU Langone employee.”
Jabr’s Perspective:
Jabr took to Instagram to share her side of the story, noting that she received her termination letter later in May.
She expressed that her comments were deeply personal, reflecting the pain of seeing fellow Palestinians suffering significant losses due to the conflict.
Context of the Gaza Conflict:
The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in severe humanitarian crises.
According to the local health ministry, over 36,000 people have died in the past eight months.
The war has caused widespread hunger and displacement, affecting nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents.

The conflict escalated dramatically on October 7 when Hamas, the militant Palestinian group governing Gaza, launched an attack on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
This incited a brutal response from Israel, leading to significant casualties and displacement in Gaza.
Broader Implications:
As a Muslim nurse in US has been fired after calling Israel’s war in Gaza ‘genocide’, the conflict has heightened tensions globally, leading to increased incidents of Islamophobia and antisemitism.
It has also sparked widespread demonstrations in the U.S. and other countries, reflecting deep-seated divisions over the issue.
