Who killed Bangladeshi lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar in India?
Anwarul Azim Anar, a distinguished member of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League party, was discovered murdered in Kolkata on Wednesday, marking the end of an intense search that began more than a week ago.
Anar, 56, had vanished on May 13, shortly after arriving in India for medical treatment.
The grim discovery was confirmed by Bangladesh’s Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, who revealed that three Bangladeshi nationals have been detained in connection with the murder.
Details remain scant as both Bangladesh and Indian authorities are conducting a joint investigation.
“We cannot disclose all information at the moment for the sake of the investigation,” Khan told reporters.
Anar, who had been serving his third consecutive term representing a constituency in the border district of Jhenaidah, disappeared under mysterious circumstances, causing concern and speculation among his colleagues and constituents.
Indian law enforcement has registered a murder case but has yet to recover Anar’s body.

Akhilesh Chaturvedi, a senior police officer in West Bengal, indicated that key evidence has been found, including video footage from the housing complex where Anar stayed and traces of blood.
“We have secured video footage from the housing complex where he was staying during the visit…some blood stains were also seen during the investigation,” he said.
Another senior officer, speaking anonymously, suggested that the crime might have links to terror outfits, though this theory remains under investigation.
