Who’s in and out of PDM 2.0 govt in Pakistan? After prolonged negotiations following a controversial general election, Pakistan’s political heavyweights have formalized an agreement to establish a new government.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have declared their intent to forge a coalition government, with significant leadership roles assigned.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has disclosed that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif will assume the Prime Minister’s office for a second term, while PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari will reclaim the presidency.

While the allocation of other key governmental positions remains pending, pending parliamentary and presidential votes slated for late February will determine the final composition.

The PPP is expected to secure the positions of Senate chairman and Punjab governor, while the selection of governors for Sindh and Balochistan will fall within the prerogative of the PML-N.

Furthermore, the Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and PML-Q are set to be integrated into the government framework, receiving roles commensurate with their respective contributions.

The appointment of the finance minister is of particular significance, given Pakistan’s pressing economic challenges.

The chosen candidate will be tasked with navigating the completion of the ongoing IMF program, negotiating favorable terms with the IMF, and formulating the 2024-25 budget in strict accordance with IMF stipulations.

Although Ishaq Dar remains the frontrunner for the finance ministerial position, alternative contenders such as Sultan Ali Allana and Muhammad Aurangzeb are also under consideration for this critical role.
