Russian forces seize control of Avdiivka amid intense fighting. Russian forces have declared full control over the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, marking a significant advancement since the capture of Bakhmut last May.
This announcement, made by the Russian Defence Ministry, was accompanied by praise from President Vladimir Putin, who termed it a “success” and an “important victory.”
The timing of this takeover, just days before the second anniversary of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, underscores its strategic importance.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to the Kremlin that efforts were underway to eliminate the final pockets of resistance at the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant.
Social media footage depicted Russian soldiers hoisting the national flag over one of the plant’s buildings, underscoring Moscow’s strategic gain in the region.

In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, emphasized the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces.
He attributed the withdrawal of outnumbered troops from Avdiivka to a lack of weaponry and called on the West, particularly the US Congress, to increase military aid to Ukraine.
However, the White House placed blame on “dwindling supplies as a result of congressional inaction,” which it claimed facilitated Russian gains.
President Joe Biden, in a phone call with Zelenskyy, reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine while acknowledging the difficulties faced by its forces.
Avdiivka, once home to around 30,000 residents, now lies largely destroyed, with its population reduced to just over 1,000.

Its strategic significance stems from its proximity to Donetsk to the north, and its capture could potentially enable Russia to secure control over the two provinces comprising the industrial Donbas region.
The intense fighting for Avdiivka has seen Russian forces encircling the town on three sides since October, severely restricting resupply routes for Ukrainian troops.
Rodion Kudriashov, deputy commander of the Third Assault Brigade, described the dire situation on the ground, characterized by relentless bombing, shelling, and aerial assaults by Russian warplanes.
As Russian forces seize control of Avdiivka amid intense fighting, in a telegram message, President Putin paid tribute to fallen soldiers, honoring them as “heroes who fell in fulfilling the tasks of the special military operation.”
