No suspension of mobile phone services in Sindh on election day.
Sindh’s Caretaker Minister for Information, Ahmed Shah, has reassured the public that the situation in the province remains stable ahead of the February 8 election, stating that the apex committee has not yet discussed the possibility of suspending mobile services.
This comes amidst concerns raised by the federal government regarding potential security threats and the hint of internet service suspension if requested by local authorities.
Shah emphasized the government’s readiness to thwart any attempts by anti-state elements to disrupt peace following the polls, echoing sentiments expressed by caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ejaz regarding the security situation.
In a significant development, the Sindh High Court upheld its previous order, mandating uninterrupted internet services, including mobile internet, until the conclusion of the Pakistan election on February 8.
Regarding recent security incidents, Shah refrained from commenting on the attack on Zulfiqar Ali Shah, a Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate, near Shaheed Benazir Bhutto bypass, citing ongoing investigations.
This incident underscores growing concerns about the rise in terrorist activities across the country, particularly in KP and Balochistan.
The recent wave of violence has targeted several election candidates, prompting the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to postpone elections in certain constituencies, including NA-8 and PK-22, following the tragic death of candidate Rehan Zeb Khan.
Addressing media coverage during the electoral process, Shah affirmed the rights of accredited journalists to report on the elections while ensuring that unauthorized individuals are not allowed access to polling stations.
He clarified that individuals possessing valid identity cards will be facilitated by police and Rangers personnel.
As there will be no suspension of mobile phone services in Sindh on election day, attention remains focused on ensuring the security and integrity of the electoral process amidst ongoing security challenges.
