US senators ask Biden to impose China travel ban. A group of Republican senators, led by Marco Rubio, has penned a letter to President Joe Biden, calling for an immediate ban on travel between the United States and China due to the rapid spread of an unknown respiratory illness in the Asian country.

The senators cite concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) historical lack of transparency during health crises, particularly highlighting their behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also requested comprehensive information from China regarding a recent surge in respiratory illnesses and pneumonia clusters, particularly among children.

The call for travel restrictions comes as a proactive measure to safeguard the American public, echoing concerns about potential misinformation from Chinese authorities.

“Dear Mr. President, in light of an unknown respiratory illness spreading throughout the People’s Republic of China (PRC), we call on you to immediately restrict travel between the United States and the PRC. As you know, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has a long history of lying about public health crises. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the CCP’s obfuscation of the truth, and lack of transparency, robbed the United States of vital knowledge about the disease and its origin,” the letter from Senators Rubio, JD Vance, Rick Scott, Tommy Tuberville, and Mike Braun reads.

The senators argue that the World Health Organization’s historical deference to the CCP necessitates the United States taking independent action to protect its citizens.

The letter emphasizes the need for swift measures, asserting that waiting for the WHO’s response may not be sufficient in the face of potential risks to public health and the economy.

In their appeal, the senators defended former President Donald Trump’s decision to impose travel restrictions on China at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, stating, “History and common sense show his decision was the right one.”

While concerns grow over the recent rise in respiratory illnesses in China, the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, dismissed worries, characterizing it as a prevalent global issue that Chinese authorities are effectively managing.

“Recently we have seen some clusters of flu cases among children in certain parts of China. In fact, that is a very common phenomenon in many countries, and in China that has been put under effective control,” Mr. Wang said, adding that China’s interactions with the international community will not be affected.

The senators’ letter underscores the urgency of the situation and the potential benefits of implementing travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the unknown respiratory illness to the United States.

The call for decisive action is rooted in the lessons learned from the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to prioritize the health and safety of the American people.

As US senators ask Biden to impose China travel ban, the office of President Biden has yet to respond to the senators’ request as the international community closely monitors developments in China and awaits further information from Chinese authorities.
