On Friday, Planning Minister Asad Umar congratulated Defense Minister Pervez Khattak and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on the award of the Gold Standard Service Award to Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
The BRT was inaugurated by then-provincial chief minister Khattak in 2020, and it got the award on Thursday for offering passenger-oriented and environmentally sustainable services to Peshawar residents.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) had earlier congratulated ZuPeshawar, the BRT system’s operator, on earning the worldwide accolade, stating that Peshawar had now become the first city in the subcontinent, third in Asia, and 11th in the world to receive the Gold Standard.
Dr. Walter Hook, a member of the technical committee that evaluates world-class BRTs based on best practises internationally, handed the award to K-P Minister for Higher Education Kamran Bangash on Thursday, according to an ADB release.
The city received the Gold Standard for modernising transportation with its clean technology buses, supporting non-motorized traffic, and transporting a whopping 250,000 people each day, 20 percent of whom are women.
The BRT has previously received the International Sustainable Award from the International Transport Organization, as well as UN Women’s award for providing the greatest and safest transport option for women. He went on to say that the BRT was giving passengers with the best possible commuting options.
