Rohit Sharma, despite being offered the T20 captaincy, has successfully secured a break from white-ball cricket in South Africa.
The experienced batsman, who is currently on holiday in the UK, expressed the need for an extended rest after a demanding four-month season, including the T20 World Cup.
However, sources within BCCI indicate that if Rohit decides to lead India in the T20 World Cup next year, he will assume the captaincy.
Virat Kohli’s request for a break from limited-overs games has also been granted. Suryakumar Yadav will step up as the T20 captain, while KL Rahul will take charge of the ODI squad.

Notably, this decision signifies that Hardik Pandya is no longer guaranteed the T20 captaincy for the T20 World Cup if Rohit Sharma opts to play in the shortest format.
Following the T20 World Cup in 2022, Rohit Sharma had previously shown reluctance to participate in T20s, focusing more on 50-over cricket.
The current break aligns with his strategic approach to managing his workload.
The squad selections for Tests, ODIs, and T20Is reveal a distinct separation, with only three players—Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar, and Ruturaj Gaikwad—included in all three formats.
Notable exclusions and inclusions include Axar Patel being dropped from the T20 squad, while Ravindra Jadeja assumes the role of T20 vice-captain.
In the Test format, Kona Bharat has not been included, with KL Rahul taking on the wicketkeeping duties.
This decision opens up two middle-order slots in the Test lineup for Shreyas Iyer and reserve batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The injury status of Mohammed Shami remains under scrutiny, but the pacer has been included in the Test squad. Prasidh Krishna is named as his cover, ensuring contingency plans are in place.
While ODIs are considered the least significant format currently, a forward-looking approach towards the 2025 Champions Trophy is evident.
KL Rahul will lead a new-look ODI squad, featuring promising talents like Rajat Patidar, B Sai Sudharshan, and Rinku Singh, all possessing impressive List A records.
