Despite this, New Delhi has let the ambassador and mission personnel, chosen by the Western-backed administration headed by the former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, to carry on managing visa issuing and commercial matters.

After the Taliban took power, bilateral trade between India and Afghanistan, which had reached $1.5 billion in 2019–2020, significantly decreased.
In a related matter, hundreds of college students from Afghanistan who were still residing in India after the expiration of their student visas staged a protest in New Delhi earlier this month, pleading with the Indian government to extend their stay.
